Oil change

1. Be sure to run your car for about 10 minutes or so to warm the oil up and be sure to park on a level ground.

First we need to gather our materials. This is what I used for my oil change:

Initial expenses:

  • Oil Catcher – $10 at Pep Boys
  • Oil Filter Wrench - $8 at Pep Boys
  • Funnel - $1 at Walmart
  • Rachet w/ sockets (assumed ownership)
Oil Change Expenses:
  • 5 qts Mobil 1 - $20 at Walmart
  • Purolator Pure One - $6 at Pep Boys

I used an 11/16”, 14mm and 12 mm sockets (couldn’t find anything bigger than my 15mm socket for the drain plug)

2. Next we need to remove the skidplates. Please refer to Joel’s DIY on removing these.
Removing Front Skidplate
3. Get your oil catcher in position underneath the oil pan and plug hole.
4. Look under the hood and use the 11/16” socket to remove the oil plug (beware of hot oil).
5. Let the oil all drain out (as much as possible), and use the oil filter wrench to loosen the filter and remove it and place in the oil catcher to drain. Let as much oil drain as possible.
6. Dip your finger in the new oil and apply a bead of the new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter. Then screw this filter in until it is hand tight, and then tighten an additional ¼ turn.
7. Under the hood, you will need to access the Oil Cap and Oil Dipstick.
8. Open your oil cap and put the filter in. Pour in about 4 quarts of the new oil, and then check the dipstick. If it looks good, start up the engine and let the oil cycle through. Then go back and check the dipstick again to verify the amount of oil is above the minimum and below the maximum notches in the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary. Repeat process until satisfied. It is VERY important you do not overfill the engine with oil.
